Escalon Drive rises steeply into the Encino Hills, offering a scenic hillside setting characterized by uniformly rectangular, single-family residential lots. The parcels are narrow and deep, with homes positioned close to the street while extending upward along the hillside. Each property features a modest strip of landscaping at the front, often paired with a stairway leading to the main entrance, reflecting the area's unique topography.
Nestled within the hills of Encino, the Escalon Drive Residential Historic District spans roughly half a mile, encompassing properties on both sides of Escalon Drive. The district begins at Empanada Place to the north and ends at two cul-de-sacs, Clemons Drive and Standish Drive, at its southern boundary.
The district comprises 98 properties, of which 78 are recognized contributors to its historic status. These homes showcase predominantly one-and-a-half or two-story split-level designs, with garages and living spaces at street level and full or partial-width second stories above. The architectural consistency is enhanced by four distinct roof styles: flat roofs, front-gable roofs, side-gable roofs, and mansard roofs, providing a cohesive yet diverse aesthetic.
The streets of Escalon Drive echo the hillside charm of Encino, with winding roads and cul-de-sacs that trace the natural contours of the terrain. Concrete sidewalks and street lamps line one side of the street, creating a balanced and functional streetscape. While there is no formalized tree-planting scheme, the neighborhood benefits from the presence of palm trees, pines, and cypress, adding an air of serenity and natural beauty.
